Sakayama is a Tokyo-based studio blending design, motion, and modern storytelling. Rooted in the precision of Japanese visual culture and inspired by international typographic movements, they sought an identity that could grow with them — adaptable across exhibitions, lectures, merch, and digital content, without ever losing its sense of curiosity.
The name “Sakayama” itself speaks in contrasts — ‘yama’ (mountain) for rootedness, ‘saka’ (slope) for movement. We translated this tension into a flexible identity system: part calculated, part kinetic. Clean typography, geometric repetition, and structured asymmetry became the core of Sakayama’s new language — one that speaks with clarity while inviting interpretation.
– Typographic Craft
We developed a bespoke wordmark that balances roundness and rigor. Its lowercase structure offers humility, while geometric proportions give it authority — a quiet confidence that feels distinctly Japanese.
– Grids in Motion
Inspired by both Bauhaus and Tokyo’s layered signboards, the layout system uses rotating modules and fixed anchors. It lets designers remix visual elements while staying within an aesthetic logic.
– Pattern Logic
We created a set of modular shapes — half-circles, diamonds, overlapping grids — that can be arranged like visual sentences. These became the backbone of both print and digital design.
– Cultural Inflections
From manga gutters to exhibition flyers, subtle Japanese design cues were embedded in the system — never loud, always intentional. The identity feels modern while acknowledging its lineage.
– Lecture Posters
Bold layouts that evolve with each event — modular, high-impact visuals designed for Tokyo’s creative districts.
– Instagram Grid System
A nine-tile grid logic with rotating geometric accents, enabling Sakayama to post with rhythm and surprise — building brand memory through variation.
– Creative Merch
Branded totes, tees, notebooks — designed to be worn, sketched on, or displayed. Each one with a slight variation, keeping the modular language alive.
– Presentation Templates
Workshop slides and creative decks built with alternating rhythm — perfect for visual lectures and portfolio showcases.
– Art Prints & Collabs
The visual system was designed to flex — enabling collaborations with illustrators and animators under the Sakayama brand umbrella.
That’s how Sakayama described their identity in the end. Built for experimentation but grounded in logic, the system invites play without losing precision. It became a toolkit for both self-expression and collective creation.
“It doesn’t just represent us — it’s something we want to keep playing with. Like building blocks for ideas.”
— Sakayama Creative Director
